TOM'S A-Z (TWO)

THIS WAS THE SECOND ROUND OF DRAWINGS I DID FOR TOM'S A-Z, WHICH LOOKED MORE AT INCORPORATING THE TEXT INTO THE IMAGES, WHICH I HADN'T PREVIOUSLY DONE. I THINK THIS WAS LARGELY SUCCESSFUL AND I WORKING ON THE GREY PAPER REALLY WORKED WELL WITH THE COLOUR AND TEXTURE OF THE CARBON PAPER LINES.

HOWEVER, ONCE AGAIN, EVEN AS I WAS MAKING IMAGES I WAS GETTING HUNG UP ABOUT HOW TO BIND THEM AND HOW TO MAKE A COHERENT SERIES OF BOOKS WHILST STILL RETAINING THE INDIVIDUAL CHARACTER OF THE PERSON..




TOM'S A-Z (ONE)

THESE WERE FROM TOM'S A-Z, AND I CHOSE HIS BECAUSE I KNOW HIM AND HIS WORDS WERE SO PERSONAL TO HIM, AND SO COMPLETELY SUMMED UP HIS PERSONALITY THAT I FELT LIKE HE HAD REALLY GOT HOLD OF THE IDEA IN THE WAY THAT I'D HOPED PEOPLE WOULD.

I WANTED TO EXPERIMENT WITH A LOOSER MEDIUM TO PEN BECAUSE KELLY'S A-Z WAS REALLY DIFFICULT, SO I USED CARBON PAPER SO THAT YOU CAN'T SEE ANY MISTAKES THAT ARE HAPPENING - YOU JUST HAVE TO ACCEPT THAT THE DRAWINGS AREN'T GOING TO LOOK EXACTLY RIGHT.

I THINK AS IMAGES THEY ARE STRONG AND I WAS PLEASED WITH THEM, BUT SOME PART OF ME JUST DIDN'T FEEL THAT IT WAS THE RIGHT RESPONSE FOR THE A-Z AS A WHOLE. I WAS STILL STRESSING ABOUT BINDING THE BOOKS, AND JUST DIDN'T QUITE FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THE PROJECT AS A WHOLE.









'STORY BOARDS'

THESE WERE A SERIES OF QUICK VISUALS I DID AS A WAY TO FREE UP MY DRAWINGS AND JUST ALLOW ME TO MAKE INSTINCTIVE RESPONSES TO THE WORDS IN THE ALPHABETS RATHER THAN GETTING TOO WEIGHED DOWN IN OVER THINKING AND ANALYSING THE PROJECT AS A WHOLE.
FOR EACH ONE I HAD TEN MINUTES AND USED A DIP PEN AND INK.











KELLY'S A-Z

THIS WAS MY FIRST ATTEMPT AT MAKING AN A-Z THAT I HAD SPECIFICALLY CHOSEN. I DECIDED THAT I WOULD USE 7 DIFFERENT A-Z'S AND WORK WITH THEM IN DIFFERENT FORMATS - THIS ONE BEING AN A6 HORIZONTAL RECTANGLE.
I CHOSE THIS A-Z BECAUSE IT HAD SOME REALLY INTERESTING IMAGERY WHICH INSTANTLY FORMED IMAGES IN MY MIND. I WANTED ALSO TO WORK WITH TEXT AND IMAGE.

I AM PLEASED WITH HOW THIS CAME OUT, BUT IT TOOK SUCH A LONG TIME TO MAKE BECAUSE I HAD SO MANY DIFFERENT COMPONENTS TO THINK ABOUT WITH EVERY DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD. THIS CAUSED ME TO LOOSE CONFIDENCE IN IT AS AN IDEA BECAUSE I JUST COULDN'T SEE HOW I WOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE ALL SEVEN IN THE TIME I HAD SET MYSELF AND THERE WAS NO WAY I COULD DO LESS THAN SEVEN OR THE WHOLE CONCEPT WOULD LOOSE ITS IMPACT.

SECOND A-Z CONTINUED

THESE ARE A COUPLE OF EXPERIMENTS I DID JUST PLAYING AROUND WITH THE TRIANGLES ON PHOTOSHOP. I LIKE THE IDEA THAT YOU COULD TECHNICALLY MAKE AN INFINITE COMBINATION OF IMAGES OR STORIES - USING JUST A SMALL AMOUNT OF PICTURES. THIS IS AN INTERESTING IDEA TO KEEP IN MIND IF I EVER WORK ON A NARRATIVE PROJECT.

SECOND A-Z

THIS WAS THE SECOND A-Z I DID, STILL UNDER THE SAME BREIF OF ILLUSTRATING ALL 63 A-Z'S. I FELT A BIT RESTRICTED BY THE STANDARD SQUARE FORMAT OF THE FIRST BOOK SO MOVED OVER TO TRY A TRIANGLE. ALSO, I CHANGED THE BACKGROUND TO BEING COMPLETELY FILLED IN. THIS IS THE OPPOSITE TO MY USUAL WORKING PRACTICE AND I ENJOYED THE CHALLENGE OF THE CHANGE.

AGAIN, I WAS PLEASED WTIH SOME OF THESE, ESPECIALLY THE MORE ABSTRACT ONES, BUT JUST FELT OVERWHELMINGLY RESTRICTED BY THE SOURCE MATERIAL'S INCONSISTENCY. I ALSO LIKED THE IDEA THAT A TRIANGLE CAN BE VIEWED FROM ANY SIDE AND THIS ALLOWED FOR THE IDEA OF INTERACTIVITY AND PLAY - TWO THINGS I AM REALLY INTERESTED IN WITH RELATION TO BOOK DESIGN AND THE AUDIENCE.
